150 Million Men are Impotent
There are over 150 million impotent men worldwide and possibly many more who are undiagnosed since they are ashamed to talk about their condition or seek treatment.
“Because, in the past, men have generally been unwilling to talk about their problem or seek treatment, erectile dysfunction has been underreported. Many physicians are not aware of the treatment options, so patients have been either under treated or not treated at all,” said the Minnesota Men’s Health Center (MMHC).
In America alone, 30 million people or 1 in 10 men are impotent, according to the US National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK). The NIDDK said over 617, 715 new cases are diagnosed each year or 51,476 per month, 11,879 per week, 1,692 per day, 70 per hour, and 1 per minute.
Impotence – also known as erectile dysfunction or erection difficulty (ED) – is the inability to have an erection and sustain it long enough for sexual intercourse to take place. It is the most common sexual disorder in men that affects all ages.
Experts say it’s normal to experience impotence from time to time. Many factors influence our enjoyment of sex and sexual desires can fluctuate from time to time depending on one’s mood, the time of the day, and one’s needs. However, if the problem persists, it can greatly affect you and your partner. Untreated, ED can prevent you from having a satisfying sex life. Worse, it can ruin relationships and lead to anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, and lack of self-confidence.
“Both partners in a relationship can experience problems when impotence goes untreated. Often failure to communicate and denial of the problem lead to depression, anxiety, and lack of self-esteem for both partners. A tendency to avoid sexual contact can often leave the partner feeling unloved, unattractive and unwanted,” said eMaxHealth.com.
There are three degrees of ED. Mild cases are characterized by a successful erection in 7 – 8 out of 10 attempts. In moderate cases, an erection occurs in 4 – 6 out of 10 attempts. In severe cases, there are less than 3 successful erections out of 10 attempts.
In 80 percent of cases, ED is caused by a physical problem or disorder. It may be the result of serious diseases like high blood pressure, diabetes or heart disease. ED may also follow surgery, especially prostate removal for prostate cancer or pelvic surgery for colon cancer. Low testosterone levels, spinal cord injury, and multiple sclerosis can likewise lead to ED. Impotence can also be a side effect of blood pressure medications, narcotics, alcohol, and sedatives.
“Smokers have a higher likelihood of erectile dysfunction. Men who smoke more than one pack per day have a 50 percent higher chance of impotency than nonsmokers the same age,” the MMHC said.
If you have ED, don’t suffer in silence. Get the facts about the disease and seek a doctor’s advice for the right treatment. The more you know about the disease, the better your chances of recovery. Treatment options for ED include oral medications, vacuum pumps, injection therapy, and surgical implants.

Physical Problems That Could Cause Impotence
Impotence is the inability of a person to maintain erection of the penis. It is the inability to sustain the erection for sexual intercourse. It can be tendency to sustain only brief erections, inability to achieve erection, or inability to sustain erection for sexual intercourse.
Impotence is not a disease but it signals that something is not correct with-in the body. It is caused gradually and there are a number of factors that cause impotence. Some of the physical causes of impotence are listed below.
Cardiovascular Diseases
Impotence occurs when the nerves that control blood flow to the penis are damaged. Hardening of arteries also results in inability to achieve erection. The blood required for an erection is not delivered appropriately because of the hardening of arteries. When the pelvic organs and the arteries to the penis are narrowed by atherosclerosis, blood required for erection is not delivered sufficiently. The insufficient supply of blood results in inability to achieve erection or inability to maintain erection for sexual intercourse.
Aging
Old men are more likely to experience erectile dysfunction when compared to young men. The compliance of the tissues present in corpora cavernosa decreases with age and this results in inability to maintain erection. Also, old men usually develop diseases that are associated with erectile dysfunction. Diabetes mellitus, strokes, heart attacks, angina are some of the diseases that are associated with erectile dysfunction.
Cancer Surgery
Sometimes, impotence is also caused because of the damage caused to the nerves during surgery. Damage caused to blood vessels during surgery also causes impotence. So, it’s very important to make sure that nerves and blood vessels are not damaged while removing the tissues that cause cancer.
Injuries
Damage to nerves in the pelvis also causes potency problems. Spinal cord injuries can also cause impotence. The damage to nerves is usually caused by accidents, diseases, and during surgical procedures.
Hormone Imbalance
Hormone imbalance also results in potency problems. Abnormal testosterone levels cause potency problems. Illnesses like kidney failure also disrupt the balance of hormones in body and the imbalance can cause problems in maintaining and achieving erection. However, it’s rare to find people facing potency problems because of hormone imbalance.
Medication
Sometimes, temporary impotence is caused because of some medicines. Medicines that interfere with nerve impulses cause erectile dysfunction. Usually, medicines used for treating high blood pressure, antidepressants, antihistamines, tranquilizers affect blood flow to the penis. The interference with blood flow to the penis causes potency problems.
Diabetes Mellitus
Impotence is caused when the blood vessels or nerves that control the flow of blood to the penis are affected. Diabetes causes nerve deterioration and this is the reason why many diabetes patients face potency problems. Diabetic men are more prone to impotence than non-diabetic men. Diabetes also damages sensory and autonomic nerves, and this causes erectile dysfunction. In diabetic men, the arteries get affected and this results in insufficient supply of blood to the penis. The insufficient supply of blood to the penis results in inability to maintain erection.
So, there are a number of factors that can cause impotence. The good news is that it’s possible to cure impotence. In the past, a number of people have been cured successfully. Medicines and exercises are usually used to cure impotence. Even a slight change in the lifestyle can also help an individual to cure impotence. The exact procedure to be used to for curing impotence depends on its cause. Once the cause has been identified, the problem can be solved efficiently.
Available Treatment Options for Impotence
Impotence is the inability of an individual to attain and maintain erection of the penis. The good news about impotence is that it’s possible to treat impotence. However, the treatment of impotence depends on its cause as there are a number of causes of impotence. Sometimes, slight changes in the lifestyle are sufficient for treating impotence and sometimes, surgery is performed for treating impotence.
Psychotherapy
Psychological impotence is treated with techniques that decrease the anxiety associated with the intercourse. Patient’s partner plays an important role in applying these techniques. Gradual development of intimacy and stimulation are common parts of the techniques used for treating psychological impotence. Techniques used for treating psychological impotence are generally useful for treating physical impotence as well.
Drug therapy
Apart from techniques for decreasing anxiety, drugs are also used for treating impotence. The drugs used for treating impotence can be injected directory into the penis or can be taken orally. Men with low levels of natural testosterone can use oral testosterone to reduce impotence. Sometimes, muscle relaxants are also used to enhance erection. Nitroglycerin is a muscle relaxant which enhances the erection when it is rubbed on the surface of the penis.
Many men inject drugs directly into the penis in order to treat impotence. When drugs are injected directly into the penis, the supply of blood to the penis increases and this reduces impotence. Insufficient supply of blood to the penis is one of the common causes of impotence, and injecting drugs directly into the penis is an effective way to reduce impotence. Phentolamine, papaverine hydrochloride and prostaglandin E1 are some of the drugs that affect the blood vessels so as to improve the blood supply to the penis. However, drugs can create unwanted side effects as well.
Vacuum devices
Sometimes, vacuum devices are also used for treating impotence. Mechanical vacuum devices help an individual to achieve and maintain erection. A plastic cylinder, a pump and an elastic band are three components of a vacuum device. The cylinder is used to place the penis and the pump is used to draw air out of the cylinder. Elastic band is used to maintain the erection after removing the cylinder.
Mechanical vacuum devices create a partial vacuum around the penis. The partial vacuum draws blood into the penis and once the sufficient amount of blood reaches penis, erection is attained. In order to maintain erection, an elastic band is placed around the base of the penis. The elastic band helps in maintaining the erection as it prevents blood from flowing back from the penis.
Surgery
Usually, surgery is performed to reconstruct the arteries so as to increase the flow of blood to the penis. Surgery is carried out to remove the obstructions that block the flow of blood to the penis. Sometimes, surgery is performed to block off the veins that allow blood to leak from the penis.
In this type of surgery, obstructions are created with-in the veins in order to prevent the leakage of blood from the penis. In some situations, surgery is performed to implant devices that restore the erection of the penis. Different types of implants are used to treat impotence. Malleable implants consist of paired rods, which are inserted surgically into the corpora cavernosa.
An end-user needs to adjust the position of the rods and the penis in order to attain erection. Inflatable implants consist of paired cylinders, which are surgically inserted inside the penis. Erection is attained by inflating the cylinders with the help of a small pump. So, it’s possible to treat impotence with surgery.
